You Don't Need to Have a Pinched Nerve to Have a Neurological Condition

There is a common misconception that chiropractic care is for “pinched nerves”. Sometimes nerves do get pinched by bone spurs or disc fragments, in these cases there would be radiating pain; numbness or weakness affecting an arm or leg. The chiropractic methods we use at Reinecke Chiropractic have good results with taking pressure off the nerves in these types of cases, usually with associated disc problems or degenerative arthritis. These are the type of cases that may even have to be referred for surgical consult.
The majority of conditions that we treat at Reinecke Chiropractic do not involve pinched nerves; they involve a different type of neurological condition.
All joints have specific nerve receptors, called mechanoreceptors, found in the muscles and ligaments that hold the joint together. Mechanoreceptors transmit signals to the brain that communicate exactly how the joint is moving and what stress it is under. The brain needs this crucial information to protect the joint and keep it strong and healthy. The brain also uses this stimulation from the mechanoreceptors to maintain homeostasis in the whole body! Stimulation to the brain from the mechanoreceptors allows the brain to perform functions necessary for the health of the entire body. That is why exercise is linked so closely to health and well-being and inactivity leads to a decline in health. Movement isn’t just good for your body—exercise recharges your brain!
Nerves rarely get pinched in the true sense of the word; physiologically, nerves lose their connection in the communication loop to the brain. When spinal segments lose their ability to move due to injury, repetitive motion, poor posture, stress or toxicity; that stimulation to improve brain function cannot be produced by the affected segment. Subluxation is the term chiropractors use to describe the condition of a spinal segment that has lost its ability to move and as a result cannot send necessary stimulation back to the brain.
The chiropractic adjustment causes the brain to “reboot” by restoring the flow of impulses to the brain that return after mobilizing the subluxated vertebral joint. Interestingly, many times people have this neurological condition, a subluxation complex, and are unaware! Though people have conditions; heartburn, indigestion, high blood pressure, headaches etc., they have not yet learned to correlate these problems with the condition of their spine.
